What does it mean to join the Ohio Donor Registry?
Joining the Ohio Donor Registry is a way to help ensure that your decision to be a donor is known and carried out. You could save up to seven lives through organ donation and enhance the quality of life for more than 50 others through tissue and eye donation! Please take a moment to review the following information about joining the Registry.
- Joining the Ohio Donor Registry is a way to legally give consent for the gift of your organs, tissues and eyes upon your death, for any purposes authorized by law.
- Organs which can be donated include heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, pancreas and small intestine.
- Tissues which can be donated include eyes, skin, bone, tendons and ligaments, heart valves, vessels, and middle ear bones.
- Purposes authorized by law include:
- Transplantation, including life-saving, restorative, reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries
- Medical and Scientific Research and Education
- You can refine your donation consent to include only specified organs and/or tissues, or only specified purpose(s).
- At any time, should you change your mind, you can remove yourself from the Registry. If you choose not to be in the Registry, at the time of your death your family will be contacted to make a decision about donation on your behalf.
- The Registry is a way to ensure your wishes are honored. However, it is still important to tell your family because they will be consulted as part of the process which determines the medical suitability of the organs and tissue for transplantation.
- To determine suitability for donation at the time of your death, you are consenting to a confidential review and documentation of the following:
- Your current and past medical records
- Laboratory testing of blood, tissue and/or cells, to check for transmissable diseases, including HIV and hepatitis, and to determine compatibility of the donor and recipient
- Your medical and social history, by interview with a close family member.
- Information in the Registry database is strictly confidential. Access is limited to licensed and certified organ, tissue and eye recovery agencies, and will be used only at the time of death to confirm your wishes.
- Organs, tissues and eyes are distributed locally, regionally and nationally for transplant based on need, although some donated tissues may be transplanted abroad.
- Although all organ, tissue and eye recovery agencies are non-profit agencies, multiple institutions, including non-profit and for-profit agencies, may be involved in the use and placement of your gift.
Having read the above, I would like to proceed to register my decision to be a donor in the Ohio Donor Registry.
