Anyone Can Be a Hero Through Donation

Transplantation is one of the most remarkable success stories in the history of medicine. It gives a second chance at life to thousands of people facing organ failure and provides many others with active and renewed lives.

But despite continuing advances in medicine and technology, the need for organs and tissues is vastly greater than the number available for transplantation.

The good news is, anyone can make a difference and save lives through organ, eye and tissue donation!

Age

Anyone of any age has the potential to be a donor and adults should not opt out of the Ohio Donor Registry due to age. The oldest donor in the United States was 92 years old at the time of his death.

Teens may register upon receiving a Temporary Instruction Permit (age 15½), however, consent of a parent(s) or guardian(s) is required should a child under the age of 18 become eligible to donate. In addition to registering, people under 18 are encouraged to discuss their donation wishes with their parent(s) or guardian(s).

Medical History

No matter your age, there will be a thorough review of your medical history at the time of death to determine if you are eligible to donate, even if you have existing medical conditions. Recent advances in transplantation now allow more people to become donors, including those with:

  • Diabetes
  • Cancer (but cancer-free)
  • Poor eyesight (cornea donation)
  • HIV / AIDS

The opportunity to impact lives starts with a personal commitment to register as an organ, eye and tissue donor.

  • More than 123,000 Americans and 3,400 Ohioans are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.
  • 23 men and women die each day in the U.S. waiting for a transplant.
  • Every 48 hours an Ohioan dies waiting for a transplant.
